Pancake Slip Rings

Slip rings are an essential component of the world we live in. Vehicles, medical devices, amusement park rides, and even closed camera circuits need them to operate. In applications where the space has a low height, manufacturers usually employ a pancake slip ring.

The pancake slip ring components include a stationary metal or graphite contact, typically called a brush, which rubs on the outside edge of a rotating metal ring. The signal is conducted through the stationary brush to the turning metal ring, powering up the device.

Pancake slip ring assemblies may also be used in wound rotor motors not for transmission but for providing resistance to the rotor windings, to increase torque.

While slip rings come in a variety of styles, the pancake slip ring comes with a host of advantages. What makes it different from the other styles is the configuration of the conductors which are arranged on a flat disc.
